It's being reported that three people were killed.
Two of them are said to be gang members.
Roadblocks have been mounted in the area and there is a heavy police presence.
The shooting started shortly after 2 o'clock.
Dennis Robotham, President of the St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce, said the market district of Spanish Town is now under lockdown.
Senior Superintendent of Police Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit, told the media that a car drove onto Cumberland road and opened fire, killing one man at that location.
The car with the shooters then fled but encountered the police and there was shootout in which one man was shot and killed.
SSP Lindsay said the car went onto Job Lane where there was a third fatal shooting.
She noted that the incident is a continuation of an intra-gang feud in the One Order Gang.
COURTHOUSE ON FIRE
Meanwhile the Spanish Town Fire station has confirmed that several units are battling a blaze at the Spanish Town Courthouse.
"We can confirm that there is a fire at the courthouse, units have been dispatched to battle the fire," a representative of the Spanish Town Fire Department said.
The town has been tense this afternoon after three people were shot dead in the Spanish Town market as gang warfare spilled over into the busy thoroughfares of the old capital.
